If your looking for a distortion that gives you vintage tone and a voice that needs anger management, look no further. Just like his milder brother the Charlie Brown overdrive pedal, the Angry Charlie is equipped with volume, tone, drive, and presence controls that live up to the JHS standard of “knobs that do something”. We tested it with both a G&L ASAT and a Custom Shop Gibson Les Paul Jr. through a Rivera Venus 5. The second we plugged in, we had to make sure the Rivera was still in the room because this dirt box gives out classic big Marshall JCM tone like no other.
Like the old Marshall's themselves, this pedal pairs wonderfully with P-90’s or Humbuckers, giving you nice tight low end and incredibly clear sustain. With low drive and high volume you get crisp, overdriven crunch with crystal clear harmonics worthy of our best attempts at some Led Zeppelin or Kansas. We loved the tone and presence knobs that add a little meat to the overdrive without making it muddy or giving it a super glossy treble boost. This was especially helpful when we put the drive knob to work, finding the sound transform into a dense but satisfying growl reminiscent of Tom Morello and his sonic mayhem with Rage Against the Machine. In the thicket of heavy drive we found the presence knob to be wonderful at avoiding that over-compressed, “squashed” signal that comes out of too much gain. With a little twist you can bring the signal completely back to life without the high end ringing in your ears the next day.
