The Charlie Brown comes equipped with the standard volume, tone, drive, and presence knobs. With everything at the halfway mark, you get a great blues grit perfect for Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughn style playing. With consistently medium bottom end, the tone is given a warm yet strong profile, avoiding overpowering the natural guitar signal. This is where product testing with a G&L Legacy turns into an hour-long procrastination jam.
After I had my fill, I cranked the drive to see what the pedal could really do. The overdrive is pure, clear, and it absolutely screams. This is an area seemingly made for a hard rocking Humbucker guitar. Pinch harmonics come with ease, high register notes sing for what seems an eternity, and rhythm chords pack a punch without a squashed or muddy signal. This is also where the presence knob becomes your best friend. With everything going full force, you may want a scream instead of a shriek, so you simply roll the presence back and the signal can go from “in your face” to whatever you determine a comfortable distance. This also makes the pedal extremely versatile when it comes to interchanging amps and guitars.
Most players know that it’s always a risk buying pedals because they can really take control of your sound, and far too often in a bad way. We believe that the Charlie Brown can find its home in any rig with absolutely no downside.
