Where to begin with the B-1005? Let's start with the sexy carved Swamp Ash body with Bicote top. It balances nicely on the shoulder and at 9.2 pounds not particularly heavy for a 5-string. The 5-piece Wenge/Purple heart neck scores points both for looking very cool, and also promising the type of stability that multi-piece necks provide. And while bass guitars typically don't experience a lot of fret wear, the 24 stainless frets offer a low friction slinky playing experience. Lastly both ends of the strings are anchored by high quality Gotoh hardware.

The Norstrand Big Splits are not "split" in terms of series/parallel but split coils for a fatter, punchier tone and lower noise. Compared to our current favorite active gigging bass, the B-1005 has a more forward, modern tone with greater presence, clarity and punch. But with the B-1005's 3 band EQ section it's easy to tame all that energy and dial in a more restrained vintage-flavored tone. The center-detent EQ controls have a generous boost/cut range, and the mid-shift toggle makes a noticeable difference in how the midrange knob responds. Think of a bass that you want to "sound" like and the EQ of the B-1005 can get you pretty darn close. Compared to other active basses we have sampled, the B-1005 packs a lot of tone shaping horsepower.

All of this adds up to a powerful and compelling package of features and performance that makes the B-1005 a great playing multi-purpose tool for performers, studio players and serious enthusiasts. It may not be your only bass, but it could be your only bass.
