There is something about single pickup guitars that make them way more interesting than they would appear. As compared to a two or three pickup guitar, the lower magnetic string pull gives these one-pickup wonders a great vibe and chime that is both musical and habit forming. Having a solid and simple string-thru bridge does not hurt either. 

The new LTD EC-201FT joins with world of "Junior" style guitars with their typical high level of build quality and a surprisingly low price. To keep the price down, certain cost control moves were made such as the string-thru body (no tailpiece to source) and volume-only controls. But overall the guitar feels anything but cheap.

Being fans of the P-90 style Junior guitars, the use of a humbucking pickup gave us some pause. In the normal mode the pickup has strong output, a pronounced upper midrange presence and a slightly dark voicing. Just the thing for hard rock, classic rock and even metal. But its clean tones are not particularly captivating. The split mode however is a pleasant surprise. Plenty of split humbuckers are "meh" at best, but the LTD LH-150B humbucker intentionally or not has a great personality in split mode. It's not a P-90 tone but it's got a great clean chime, sweet top end and a lovely ring. We tend to be fans of lower output pickups and letting the amp or pedal do the work, and you could do just fine leaving the pickup in split mode. But that's us and as they say: Your results may vary. 

The LTD EC-201FT is a fun, high quality axe and needs nothing to be a reliable gigging guitar or home studio favorite. If you've never had a "Junior" style guitar, the LTD EC-201FT is an affordable and musical entry point.
