The ESP Surveyor '87 bass is a throwback to the early days of ESP and is a faithful recreation of a bass model from their 1987 catalog. But more than a replica, it's a great playing bass that is capable of dishing out both vintage and modern tones. With high quality Seymour Duncan pickups, flexible controls and Gotoh hardware, it's an affordable gig-worthy bass that you don't need to mod. LTD has done the work for you.

The Surveyor is straightforward in approach and uses the popular P/J pickup format for the both thick P-bass rumble, as well as snappy and more percussive tones. While the 3-knob arrangement will have you thinking "Jazz Bass" it actually works better than that. The top knob is master volume, the middle control is pickup balance with a center detent, and the bottom control is tone. Rather than fiddle with two volume knobs to set the pickup balance, you can do that with one knob and then use the master volume to adjust overall volume without affecting the pickup balance. This is way better than the original J-bass control format, and probably only tradition keeps manufacturers using the less effective JB layout. The Duncan pickups are wound to vintage-correct specs for their respective eras, blending a nice combination of warmth and bite that is infinitely variable using the blend knob.

Combined with the slim taper neck, dark ebony fretboard and typically high level of LTD fit and finish, the Surveyor '87 is working man's (or woman's) bass that will ably slot into any playing situation.
