No matter the price point, ESP's LTD series guitars offer the maximum quality and value. And this Viper-256 is no exception. Finished in sharp-Olympic white, the Viper-256 offers classic Mahogany set neck construction and high quality hardware at a very approachable price.

The styling influences of the Viper are obvious, and the slightly offset "SG" body is comfortable and balances nicely. The three-piece Mahogany neck -- three vertical laminations are stronger than a single piece -- features ESP's thin U profile and 24 nicely finished frets on a bound neck. The neck binding is another dressy feature that is unusual for a $ 500 guitar. Jatoba is very common these days as a stand-in for Rosewood, and this Central and South American hardwood is not endangered, and is similar in hardness.

The ESP LH series pickups are tonally similar to a Duncan '59 and JB pairing and suite the character of the guitar to a tee. The pull-tone knob gives the option of splitting the two pickups, and we've found that the LH series pickups split quite nicely, especially at the bridge. Oftentimes split humbuckers can sound pretty anemic, but these pickups are a pleasant surprise. You won't sound like a Strat, but the tones are plenty useable.

The Viper-256 needs nothing to be a great everyday player, and has the fit, finish, and playing quality of guitars costing significantly more. The Viper-256 is entry-level priced, but will take you a long way on your musical journey.
