EarthQuaker Devices Spatial Delivery V3 Envelope Filter w/Sample & Hold Pedal
Just released! The new Version 3 of the Earthquaker Spatial Delivery Envelope filter takes all we know and love about the V2 pedal and adds a couple new powerful features:
- The ability to easily store, edit, and recall 6 preset pedal settings. And when we say easy we mean easy. Earthquaker has come up with the easiest store and recall method that we've experienced. No pressing two buttons simultaneously counting to three while you wiggle your nose.
- There is an added expression pedal input that in it's default mode controls resonance, but it can be assigned to any function. And you can have different expression pedal assignments for each preset. Lastly you can used the expression pedal to switch between Live and Preset mode (for saving and recalling).
The Spatial Delivery previously set itself apart from the competition by the ease in which you can dial in great tones. Envelope Filters can be touchy and finicky, and the Spatial Delivery is very user-friendly. The addition of the presets and the expression pedal makes it easy to be even more creative and save all your great ideas.
So why do we love Envelope Filters?
The envelope filter or auto-wah effect is the percussive, vocal effect that revolutionized funk music in the 70's. In 1972 a couple of Guild employees in New Jersey built the very first envelope filter effect, the legendary Mutron III. This tool of dynamic expression was featured on countless records and could be applied to guitar, bass, keyboards and more. When it comes to guitar it's hard to think of a player who utilized this effect more than The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia. Naturally this inspired countless attempts at capturing the heart of this circuit but very few have taken it further. That is until the Spatial Delivery by EarthQuaker Devices.
This voltage controlled envelope filter is capable of nailing the classic auto-wah tones in both upward and downward filter sweep modes. The upward sweep attacks with a quacky vocal quality akin to the chopped up guitar sound of Rufus' Tell Me Something Good. The downward sweep offers the iconic laser-gun sound that Jerry Garcia made famous in the late 70's. The third and really innovative setting on the Spatial Delivery is the Sample and Hold mode. In this setting the voltage controlling the filter is randomized, resulting in a funky barrage of melodic ebbs and flows. The Range knob becomes a rate control in this mode, adjusting the rhythm of sweep for a variety of bouncing, glitchy trails that seamlessly work themselves into musical arrangements. If you've been looking for an auto-wah effect that breaks the mold, sign up for the Spatial Delivery.
Direct From Earthquaker Devices ...
We took the already cosmic, original Spatial Delivery and added six presets to store all those favorite settings, from dissonant sweeps to rhythmic auto-wah frequencies to oscillating robot gibberish. Find and save your favorite filtered frequency…forever! Or, for ten minutes, until you find six new favorites. We also added expression control after hundreds - heck, thousands - of requests! The expression jack assignment can be saved and recalled in any of the slots, so that signature sounds are readily available with a quick tap of the switch. Save your settings confidently and quickly, no menu diving required!
For all the Spatial Delivery diehards, all of the funky, familiar features of the original are still in place. It boasts three modes - switchable Up Sweep, Down Sweep and Sample and Hold functions - along with Range, Resonance and Filter controls. Get some wild filter sweeps with the Up and Down modes and adjust the Range to control the sensitivity and reaction time of the envelope, altering the width of the frequency sweep. In the Sample and Hold mode, the Filter is controlled by random voltage and the Range controls the speed. The Filter can be crossfaded between high pass (counterclockwise), band pass (center) and low pass (clockwise) for a wide variety of voices. The resonance control goes from zero to the brink of oscillation and adds more body and ring to the filter voice. Try to find something funky and formidable that the Spatial Delivery can’t do - we dare you!
Controls
1. Range: Adjusts the sensitivity of the envelope in Up and Down mode. In Sample and Hold mode, this controls the speed.
2. Mode Toggle: This toggles between Upward Sweep, Downward Sweep or Sample and Hold.
3. Resonance: This is the filter feedback control, it adds more body and ring to the filter voice.
4. Filter: This crossfades between high pass and low pass filters and allows you to get everything in between. High pass is fully counterclockwise, low pass is full clockwise and center is band pass. This is much more useful than a simple switch because it allows you to blend the filters for different sounds!
5. Presets: Six available preset slots for you to save and recall your favorite settings! The settings for each of the three controls, the mode switch and the expression jack assignment can be saved and recalled in any of the slots.
Suggested Placement
We recommend placing the Spatial Delivery first in your signal chain. However, due to its envelope control, experimenting with pairing and signal chain placement can take the potential of the Spatial Delivery even further.
Flexi-Switch® Technology
This device features Flexi-Switch® Technology! This relay-based, true bypass switching style allows you to simultaneously use momentary and latching style switching.
-
For standard latching operation, tap the footswitch once to activate the effect and then tap again to bypass.
-
For momentary operation, hold the footswitch down for as long as you’d like to use the effect. Once you release the switch the effect will be bypassed.
Since the switching is relay based, it requires power to pass signal.
Power
This device takes a standard 9 volt DC power supply with a 2.1mm negative center barrel. We always recommend pedal-specific, transformer-isolated wall-wart power supplies or multiple isolated-output supplies. Pedals will make extra noise if there is ripple or unclean power. Switching-type power supplies, daisy chains and non-pedal specific power supplies do not filter dirty power as well and let through unwanted noise. DO NOT RUN AT HIGHER VOLTAGES!
