JAM Pedals Retrovibe mk.4 Vibrato/Chorus Guitar Pedal
The Vibe effect is essentially a heavily tweaked phase shifter, meant to produce lush chorus and vibrato sounds a la the Leslie Rotary Speaker. That was the goal for UniVox at least, who released the Uni-Vibe in 1968 to offer musicians an affordable alternative to an expensive and bulky rotary speaker cabinet. The phase effect is a similar form of modulation, created by splitting your signal into two paths and mixing an altered signal with evenly spaced notches in the frequency spectrum. The distinct peaks and valleys in the signal occur when certain frequencies in both signal paths cancel each other out, making the whooshing sound we know and love. The difference between that and the Vibe is that the frequency filters are staggered rather than layered, creating a deeper and more hypnotic effect. While the mk.3 pedal had the exact same layout as the Uni-Vibe, the new mk.4 adds the tempo/ramping button, while retaining the expression pedal input for modulation speed, and in the internal intensity trimmer.
As with every JAM pedal, the Retro Vibe nails the spirit of the original while improving flexibility, noise and reliability. It's not inexpensive, but for the true effect connoisseur the JAM Retro Vibe is without peer.
In the words of JAM Pedals:
The RetroVibe has long stood among the most revered Uni-Vibe interpretations ever made, celebrated for its lush pulse, vocal shimmer, and unmistakable warmth.
The mk.4 continues that legacy. Its ground-up all-analog redesign preserves the soul of the original while expanding its expressive range. A wider Depth and Speed span, plus new Tap Tempo and Ramping functions, invite deeper interaction and performance freedom.
Switch between Chorus and Vibrato modes to explore everything from slow, liquid waves to fast, rotary-like spins· always alive, always unmistakably RetroVibe.
The RetroVibe Mk.4 is already in the hands of Paul Gilbert, Greg Koch, Joey Landreth, and Ruban Nielson of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, long-time RetroVibe users, whose feedback on the Mk.4 has been unanimously enthusiastic.
Plug in a standard passive 10k expression pedal for real-time control of modulation Speed, and shape the sound as it moves.
Roses are red violets are blue the RetroVibe’s purple and you’ll looove it too!
