Test Gear: G&L Fallout with Emerson Custom Wiring kit and David Allen P-51 Bridge Pickup through a Fender Vibrolux Reissue
The Red Dirt Overdrive by Robert Keeley is a simple beast, and the mini stays true to that notion. Three controls: Drive, Tone and Level. The Layout should remind you of a famous slime green pedal we all know and love, but once you hear the Red Dirt you won't look back. In fact Keeley's final draft of the Red Dirt was inspired by his world famous tube screamer modifications.
The tone of the Red Dirt is sublime. The low end is rich and almost fuzz-like and with a bridge pickup it bristles with content. The midrange is why you'll want this pedal, and it lends substantial heft to your tone without it obscuring the details or sounding stuffy. The high end is where you get your sweet sustain and sparkling harmonics. You'll cut through any mix, but there is nothing harsh about it.
The finishing touch on the Red Dirt Mini is inside the box. There are 2 internal dip switches that allow you to customize the baseline tone Red Dirt tone by altering the clipping diodes. Here are the winning combinations:
Distortion - Two to three times the normal screamer gain. Thick saturation and intense sustain.
Overdrive - Less compressed tone with a dense midrange and smooth high end.
Crunch - Natural and gritty with increased headroom and authoritative low end.
Amp - Bold, open tone that gives you more command over the dynamics of the breakup
Robert Keeley totally gets what guitar players want, and executes with precision. If you need a tube-style overdrive that will make your entire rig sound better and in a pretty red box smaller than your cell phone, go with the Red Dirt. This is a brand new product, and we are an authorized Keeley Electronicsdealer and keep a good stock of product on hand at all times.
