The Fender Hammertone Fuzz takes its cues from those early British-style fuzz boxes—the Fuzz Face, Sola Sound classics, and the like. While many of those legendary pedals relied on now-rare germanium transistors, the Hammertone uses readily available silicon diodes to get into a very similar sonic neighborhood at a much friendlier price. Here’s the part that often gets overlooked: a lot of the great fuzz sounds from the ’60s and ’70s weren’t totally dimed-out walls of fuzz. They were relatively clean fuzz pedals pushing a tube amp in just the right way. Think of players like David Gilmour, who often used a germanium boost to drive the front end of a Hiwatt amp. In that same spirit, the Hammertone Fuzz doesn’t have to be maxed out to earn its spot on your board. It can be part of your sound without being all of your sound—and that’s where the magic really starts to happen.
