Walrus Audio Deep Six Compressor V3 Pedal

The use of compression is ubiquitous in the recording world to, but often misunderstood when it comes to pedal boards and live applications. Compression should be thought of more as an enhancement than as an "effect" and like a spice is often best when used in moderation. The Walrus Audio Deep Six compressor gives you all the control you need to fine tune your signal in a compact format.

Basic Theory: In very simple terms a compressor limits the dynamic range between your quietest and loudest tones. A bit of compression can smooth out your signal making it sound more even and less peaky. Too much compression and it's squashed and lifeless. Attack is how fast the compressor reacts to your dynamics, and sustain is how long it sustains the signal. Attack and Sustain controls are typical to almost any compressor, but Walrus also includes a Blend control to give the option of blending in some unaffected signal, and a Tone control which cuts the low frequency response (compressors can sometimes overreact to low frequencies and compress too much). More than most effects compressors take some experimentation, and in many cases less is more. But when dialed in it can mean the difference between ho-hum and tone that sounds alive and rich. Put a Deep Six at front of your signal chain and breathe some new lift into your rig.

General user tips that we find helpful:

  • Attack - Super important. Attack is how quickly the compression is applied. If your signal is super peaky, attack can help smooth it out. But be careful as too much attack can interfere with your picking dynamics and alter the way your guitar feels. In most situations, we prefer a slower (low setting) attack so as not to alter the initial response of the signal. This is the knob that makes many guitarists "not like" compressors. A little goes a long way.
  • Sustain - Opposite of Attack. High sustain or "release" setting will hold out the note longer, and create lingering sustain. Using moderate amounts of attack and release can make your playing sound more even and smooth, but still natural
  • Blend - This blends the balance between the natural and compressed signals. Blending the natural "dry" signal in with the compressed signal can help restore attack and dynamics while still allowing the compressor to smooth out and sustain the notes.
  • Level - When you compress a signal, there is a reduction in gain. Make-up helps you compensate for that. Of if you don't use the compressor all the time, you can increase the level and use it as a mild boost.

In the words of Walrus Audio:

Updated in all the right places for top notch tone and playability.

Updates to the V3 are as follows:
• Added Tone knob (bass cut) for the ability to shape the low end of your guitar signal.
• Soft switch/relay bypassing for smoother more reliable operation.
• Moved to top mounted in/out jacks.
• Updated art by Adam Forster that gives a humble nod to the original art that started it all.

The Deep Six is a true bypass studio-grade compressor in stomp box form, inspired by the performance of the Universal Audio 1176 with the simplicity of the Ross and Dynacomp. Offering a Level, Sustain, Attack, and Blend control, the Deep Six will give you unmatched versatility at a price you can afford.

Polarity will never be an issue as the Deep Six comes standard with a polarity correction circuit. The internal voltage is doubled to 18 volts giving you the maximum amount of headroom for your sound while maintaining a typical current draw of 8.9mA.

The Deep Six also offers a Blend and Attack control which allows you to use the pedal with active pickups or humbuckers. The blend feature allows you to use high output instruments while truly being able to dial out any distortion that may be present.
