G&L ASAT Bass Vintage White Rosewood w/wood binding

Vintage White is a deliciously creamy finish that looks good enough to eat. And few shapes show it off as well as the G&L ASAT bass. The ASAT bass melds Leo's famous Tele® shape with G&L's flexible passive/active electronics and full range MFD pickups. With a comfortable fully contoured body and sleek JB-neck profile, this ASAT Bass is an easy playing sonic Tour de Force.

This USA ASAT Bass features:

  • Vintage White on Alder, 9.4 pounds
  • Scraped wood binding
  • Front and Rear contours for extra comfort
  • Satin clear maple neck
  • Indian Rosewood fingerboard
  • #8 Modern Narrow neck, 12" radius, 1.5” width at the nut
  • G&L tuners with lightweight aluminum split posts
  • (2) G&L MDF humbucking pickups
  • Volume, treble and bass controls
  • Three way pickup selector
  • Mini toggle for passive/active/active + high boost operation
  • Deluxe tolex hardshell case
  • Made in Fullerton, CA

With such a wide range of control options, just about every classic bass guitar sound resides somewhere inside the ASAT Bass. G&L's MFD pickup design harmoniously combines strong output with a wide and balanced frequency response. Combined with both bass and treble controls (with active or passive mode) there is tremendous sonic flexibility. So let's start with the three position pickup selector:

The neck pickup is mellow with a round full bass that somewhat sonically mimics a P-bass tone, but with more enhanced midrange. The MFD bridge has a good bit of twang and treble response, and the combination is still warm but with more definition and string separation (very similar to a Jazz Bass). In addition to the 3-way pickup selector you also have a series/parallel switch for enhanced tone shaping.

Series Mode - Fat, meaty tones with an accentuated midrange growl that still have plenty of articulation, especially when using a pick. Just the ticket for hard driving rock, punk and heavier styles

Parallel - Very much like the blend of the two pickups on a JB, with a smooth silky tone, but enough high end definition to sit well in the mix and not sound muddy. Great for jazz, pop, and percussive slap playing.

Lastly, all of the above options are available in passive mode, active mode, or active with a high end EQ boost. The difference between active and passive is not dramatic, but active mode is a little crisper with a slightly quicker attack and more responsive tone controls. Neither is "better" and it is easy to dial in great sounds with either. More than anything else the selection of active or passive may come down to what type of amplifier you are using.

The neck on this ASAT bass is what they call their 'Modern Narrow' profile. It has a 1.5" width at the nut and an optional 12" radius, which still generally places it in J-bass territory. It is a comfortable C shape that is easy to navigate and the 12 inch radius works for just about any style of playing. While this guitar was not ordered with a quarter-sawn neck, the grain orientation is very much perpendicular to the fretboard, which is beneficial for stability and better note attack.

While the ASAT bass balances nicely on the shoulder, the unique "Tele" shape is is not your normal bass shape.  G&L thoughtfully provides two different strap button locations at the bottom of the guitar to allow the option of two different balance points. For gigging or studio work, the ASAT Bass offers out-of-the-box looks, a vast array of tonal options, and the flexibility of both passive and active electronics.
