Kiloton is kind of a cheeky name for a serious instrument, and references to trinitrotoluene (TNT) aside, this bass guitar does pack a punch. Of course a fretless bass is its own unique breed of instrument, and for the jazz or progressive player, you can get tones and tonal nuances that are just not possible on a fretted bass. G&L's ghost line option makes life a little easier by showing where the frets should be, and making intonation less of a guessing game. If you are a part-time fretless player, ghosts lines are the way to go.
With the G&L-made MFD passive humbucker, there is both power and finesse. Until now you could only find the G&L MFD humbucker on the L or M-series bass guitars, which have more complex controls; and in the case of the M-series are active only. For those who favor a simpler approach, the Kiloton gets right to point: One volume, one tone and a three way mini toggle switch for exploring the nuances of the MFD pickup. The switch puts the pickups in series, split or parallel mode.
Series Mode - Fat, meaty tones with an accentuated midrange growl that still have plenty of articulated, especially when using a pick. Just the ticket for hard driving rock, punk and heavier styles
Split - Clean, crisp piano-like tones reminiscent of a JB bass with loss of clarity and note separation. Responsive and snappy, this setting works well for slap too.
Parallel - Very much like the blend of the two pickups on a JB, with a smooth silky tone, but enough high end definition to sit well in the mix and not sound muddy. Great for jazz, pop, or when you want to chill but still lay down a solid groove.
The Kiloton is great new take on the single pickup bass format, and is simultaneously straightforward and versatile. The G&L Kiloton 5 Fretless is perfect for studio players and performers who value quality and simplicity without sacrificing flexibility.
