G&L Legacy Left Handed Old School Tobacco Ash

Nothing radical or out of the box here (okay just kidding, it's a lefty): Just a pretty guitar that oozes old school while benefiting from G&L's evolutionary improvements and custom shop quality. The G&L Old School Tobacco Sunburst finish is always classically elegant and the combination of maple fingerboard with a smooth satin finished neck is both understated and comfortable to play.

This G&L Legacy in Old School Tobacco Sunburst features:

  • Left Handed Swamp Ash body with Old School Tobacco Sunburst finish, 8.2 pounds
  • G&L 'Modern Classic' neck profile - 25.5" scale with 9.5" fingerboard radius
  • Maple neck with vintage satin finish
  • Sperzel locking tuners
  • 3-Ply Parchment pickguard, matching covers and knobs
  • G&L Dual Fulcrum Vibrato
  • 3- G&L CLF-100 ALNICO V single coil pickups, middle reverse wound
  • G&L "PTB" passive treble and bass controls
  • G&L non-compression truss rod
  • Deluxe Tolex hardshell case made in the USA by G&G Cases

Lefty's deserve some love too, and this guitar delivers the classic punchy chime that the Legacy is known for. Alder is the typical wood choice for this guitar but Swamp Ash looks beautiful under the G&L's Old School Tobacco finish. Tonally Swamp Ash adds some top end sweetness and more midrange scoop than Alder. No shortage of chime with this guitar.

The G&L ALNICO Legacy pickups typically measure around 6.2-6.4K ohms, putting them sonically in the early 60's era of output and tone. Compared to a Tweed-era pickup they give up a little glassiness for some welcomed low end and slightly firmer midrange. However, with the G&L passive treble and bass controls, it's easy to roll off the bass for a little more snap and spank. For funky rhythm or just hard strumming the ability to tweak both bass and treble is extremely valuable, and gives the Legacy an edge in terms of functionality.

The extra "oomph" of the G&L single coils responds nicely to pedals and distortion. Under mild gain settings, the tones are expressive with nice chewy tones that start out dirty, but clean up as they decay. Perfect for blues players who like a little hair on their notes. Add more gain and the Legacy thickens up, and is more rock-ready than you'd expect, with chunky mids and crystalline overtones. Even the bridge pickup gets into the act, and responds well to increased gain without getting too icy or crackly. While certainly not a metal machine, the Legacy is voiced to easily transition from blues to funk, and into some reasonably heavy rock tones.

The slimmer Modern Classic neck profile adds to the comfort with its vintage feel and easy navigation. The Modern Classic blends the profile of the #1a neck (.820" to .870" 1st to 12th fret) with a 1-11/16th nut width. The slightly wider nut width reduces the potential for string fall-off during bends, and the 9.5" radius feels remarkably similar to the old 1-5/8" neck (the string spacing is identical). Overall it's very playable, bends well, and the slimmer profile will appeal to players looking for a more Fender-like experience.

Sonically and visually, this guitar has it all going on. It has the "vintage look" without being gimmicky, and the tone will draw just as much attention. The G&L Legacy is an evolutionary improvement on Leo Fender's classic design, and a great USA guitar value.
