We've become fans of G&L's satin frost topcoat and it works really well with a number of finishes, giving them and "older" look without being worn looking. They also don't show smudges and fingerprints. Combined with a dark streaky Rosewood fretboard and mint plastics it nails the look of a vintage guitar out of the box.
In 2019 G&L did some re-tooling on several of their neck profiles, and their V-neck was one those profiles that got a refresh. In the past the "DVNK" was a hard V all the way up the neck and real deep at the upper frets. Now it's more of a softer V shape that transitions to a C shape around the eighth fret. The Deep V profile is a a bit of a rare bird in the G&L factory, but if you like palm-filling necks that don't feel like a phone pole, the V might be for you. A V-neck is great for blues and barre chords, albeit less so for some jazzier chord forms where you need to arrange several fingers across the fret board.
The G&L Legacy is equipped with (3) G&L Alnico V flat pole pickups that are wound in the low 6K-ohm range. This correlates to an early 60's specification, and while not as glassy as the later 60's CBS-era pickups, they have a little more kick and a less edgy nature. While not by any means a high output pickup, they have sufficient midrange content to drive distortion pedals nicely and produce fat chunky blues tones. The tones are classically "Strat" in nature but a little huskier, and in our opinion the mass of a fatter V-neck gives the guitar a little more low end grunt and body. Guitars of this type can sometimes be a little too bright, quacky and brittle, but through our Deluxe Reverb it has a pleasing blend of snap and depth.
In relation to tonal capabilities, the G&L DF Vibrato is also noteworthy. Rather than relying on a few springs and wood screws, it is an improved design that has the bridge floating on two adjustable hardened steel studs mounted in large brass body anchors. This type of floating mechanism allows the player to bend notes upward or downward with complete confidence that the guitar will stay securely in tune. Paired with the versatile Legacy pickups, there are endless possibilities for soaring sound creations.
Lastly, the passive treble and bass controls do just that, allowing both bass and treble roll off. Need to lean out the neck pickup for some percussive funk riffs? Now you can do that. Most tone controls only take out highs, but the G&L's PTB system you have full control.
The G&L Legacy is more than just a copy of an original. For a very reasonable street price you get the type of fit, finish, hardware, and high quality electronics that makes a guitar feel crafted, not just assembled. Whether you are a pro or serious hobbyist, the G&L Legacy is a guitar that won't let you down.
