Over 70 year's later, Leo Fender's iconic solid body breakthrough continues to charm players of all stripes. And Leo's final incarnation -- the ASAT Classic -- features the same timeless layout with important updates including their specially design Magnetic Field Design pickups. And with G&L's pickguard delete option, it shows off even more great Swamp Ash grain. Who would have guessed that two pickups and a slab of wood could be so much fun?

G&L's Greenburst finish is not that common, and we like it with the no-pickguard option to show off the nice Swamp Ash grain. Swamp ash is also a good pairing with the Magnetic Field Design pickups. MFD pickups have plenty of midrange content and the slightly scooped nature of the swamp ash lightens the mids slightly and sweetens the top end. It's a nice complement to the punchy nature of the MFD pickups, which utilize a low resistance coil and strong ceramic magnet for plenty of output while not sacrificing frequency response.

If you're used to the slightly compressed, sometimes dark sound of a traditional Telecaster neck pickup, the ASAT Classic pickup is a nice surprise. Full up, it's clean, bold, with a very even response across the spectrum. It can punch like a P90, but is cleaner and more detailed. Roll off the volume just a tad and the classic round, slightly hollow Tele neck tone appears, but with better clarity and less compression.

The ASAT Classic bridge pickup is a Jeykyll/Hyde affair. Played clean it is sparkly with plenty of twang on tap, and any icy tendencies are tempered by the even mannered response of the Swamp Ash body. There is more midrange and body than a traditional Tele pickup, and overall its a richer sound but with all the traditional flavors packed in there. Add your favorite gain pedal and this pickup becomes an awesome classic rock machine with gobs of overtones, harmonic complexity, and great sustain aided by the string-through body and brass saddles. It's truly great lead pickup; more articulate than a humbucker, and enough bottom end to lay down tight defined rhythms.

The standard neck on this ASAT is their Modern Classic profile with a depth of .820 and .870 at the first and twelfth frets, respectively. The feel is very close to a typical USA Fender, and the 1-11/16 nut width and 9.5" radius is comfortable for chording while still allowing fairly deep bends. Since its introduction in 2015, the Modern Classic has been the hands-down favorite. As with all G&L guitars, the nicely finished frets and non-compression truss rod provide a very consistent playing experience that is a snap to dial in.

This is a deceptively versatile guitar, and its ability to flow from country twang to jazz, blues, funk and killer rock crunch makes it hard to put down. Who would have guessed that two pickups and a slab of wood could be so much fun? The G&L ASAT Classic combines classic looks, flawless finish, and outstanding flexibility.
