G&L ASAT Special Lake Placid Blue DFV Rosewood ASAT super bridge pickup

You don't see it often, but yes you can get the ASAT Special with their Dual Fulcrum Vibrato bridge. So we did. And to top it off we also equipped it with G&L's somewhat forgotten ASAT Super bridge pickup originally used on the SC-2. The ASAT Special delivers the full frequency response and a bouncy, touch sensitive attack that is reminiscent of a vintage guitars but with much greater output and even response. This guitar evokes the sounds of the Strat, Tele, and even Jazzmaster but with a little extra oomph.

This custom ordered USA G&L ASAT Special features:

  • Alder body, Lake Placid Blue finish, 8.4 pounds
  • Rear body contour
  • Scraped wood binding
  • G&L Dual Fulcrum bridge
  • Original Leo Spec. 1.625" body depth
  • Satin clear 'Modern Classic' neck, 9.5" radius, 1-11/16" nut width
  • Rosewood fretboard
  • Medium Jumbo Jescar frets
  • G&L locking tuners
  • G&L Large MFD neck pickup
  • G&L ASAT "Super" bridge pickup
  • Mint pickguard
  • Volume and Tone Control, 3-way switch
  • G&L deluxe tolex hardshell case
  • Made in the USA

The G&L large MFD (magnetic field design) pickup is unique to the G&L brand. Developed by Leo Fender at G&L, it employs a fairly low resistance coil (typical ~5K range) and ceramic bar magnet construction. That may sound like a P-90 but not really; and unlike conventional high output pickups, the MFD combines strong output and wide frequency response. The MFD has the touch sensitivity, dynamics and slightly scooped midrange of great vintage single coils, but with greater tonal flexibility and output. The neck pickup has a glassy quality that is clean and articulate with a nice slightly hollow Strat tone on the upper frets. But its broad frequency response and strong low end make it very versatile, and it can easily mimic a rounder Tele or even a Jazzmaster-ish vibe. Roll off the tone control, and it takes on a warmer character, while still retaining upper and low end definition. The MFD is not just different, it's a real improvement; and the ASAT large MFD is one of the sweetest and most versatile neck pickups available in any guitar.

So what's going on at the bridge? While the standard ASAT Special MFD pickup does a wonderful twangy rendition of Leo's original Tele bridge pickup, it can be a little light-bodied for more energetic styles of music and higher gain levels. Enter the ASAT "Super" pickup. Originally equipped on earlier versions of the SC-2, it has 1500 more turns that the standard pickup and an a resistance of around 6.4K. While no means a hot sounding pickup, it has just enough extra midrange content to toughen it up a bit, and adapt better to heavier styles of music. It does everything the original ASAT bridge pickup can do, but with a little more authority and gas.

And then we have the bridge: The DFV has always been a standard option on the ASAT Special but you don't see it much. It works just fine thank you, and that wonderful ASAT neck pickup deserves a little shimmer now and then too. And while a floating bridge tends to brighten up any guitar, the ASAT Super bridge pickups helps to temper that additional brightness.

The neck on this guitar is the standard Modern Classic which blends a slightly wider nut width with G&L's Slim C profile, and a 9.5" radius fretboard. The wider nut reduces the chance of string falloff, and the slimmer profile and 9.5" radius keeps the extra width from feeling cumbersome. G&L makes several different neck profiles, but the Modern Classic has really been a hit with players of all types.

G&L's MFD pickups make this guitar great for blues, roots, or country, but it also has the output and presence to grind out tasty rock crunch. Once you've gotten used to the clarity, power and versatility of G&L's MFD pickups, conventional single coil pickups sound a little thin and uninspiring. This particular ASAT Special combines a set of features you don't come across every day, so grab it while you can.
