By combining the rich and powerful G&L ASAT MFD bridge pickup with their own Alnico uncovered humbucker in the neck position, you get clear articulate neck tones that combine nicely with the twangy-but-rich sound of the ASAT Classic. Finished in Satin Frost Sonic Blue on Okoume, it's a versatile rock/blues/country guitar for players that need to handle a diverse song list without carrying a slew of guitars.

Back in the day, a common mod with guitar players was to swap out an underwhelming Telecaster neck pickup with something more powerful. G&L made this a standard configuration with their popular Bluesboy, where the worlds of Alnico and MFD collide to create a broad sonic landscape. We've added our own little twist to the formula by swapping out the chrome covered Alnico 2 pickup for their uncovered Alnico pickup standard in their HH guitars. 

How does Okoume affect the tone? Okoume is a plentiful African hardwood that has a look similar to Mahogany, but is actually not of the same wood species. Tonally it's also similar to Mahogany and tends to accentuate midrange frequencies and produce a more rounded smooth top end. The most noticeable effect on the Bluesboy is a slightly fatter bridge tone and a touch less twang, which ain't always a bad thing.

While the standard Bluesboy is plenty popular, the covered Alnico 2 humbucker is quite a contrast to the bright and jangly bridge pickup. Hence the switch to the AS4255Z pickup. With its's lack of cover, different windings and magnet material (we assume Alnico 5) there is a firmer bottom end attack and a cleaner more trebly top end. We think the punchier brighter tone of the AS4255Z (5500 turns of 42 gage wire) aligns nicely with the bridge pickup.

And how about that bridge pickup? The ASAT MFD bridge pickup responds with a twangy piano-like low end attack, strong output, and shimmering highs that aren't too brittle and further mellowed by the Okoume body. The bridge pickup's solid output also makes it a great lead pickup, and it absolutely loves overdrive pedals, creating harmonically complex rock crunch that is bristling with overtones. It's both a fine traditional country pickup, and a very capable rock pickup. 

The neck on this guitar is the standard Modern Classic which blends a slightly wider nut width with G&L's Slim C profile, and a 9.5" radius fretboard. The wider nut reduces the chance of string falloff, and the slimmer profile and 9.5" radius keeps the extra width from feeling cumbersome. The feel is very similar to the typical USA Fender profile, and capped off by a nice dark rosewood fretboard, it's a great playing experience

The G&L Bluesboy has multiple personalities: It can easily cop great country and pop tones, and the uncovered neck pickup is arguably even more suited to modern blues tones. And with your favorite stomp box the Bluesboy is not averse to dishing out some great classic rock crunch. It's killer for Wedding/General Business/Cover players that need to run the range without carrying a slew of guitars.
