With such a wide range of control options, just about every classic bass guitar sound resides somewhere inside the ASAT Bass. G&L's MFD pickup design harmoniously combines strong output with a wide and balanced frequency response. Combined with both bass and treble controls (with active or passive mode) there is tremendous sonic flexibility. So let's start with the three position pickup selector:
The neck pickup is mellow with a round full bass that somewhat sonically mimics a P-bass tone, but with more enhanced midrange. The MFD bridge has a good bit of twang and treble response, and the combination is still warm and leans toward a J-bass vibe. In addition to the 3-way pickup selector you also have the Seried/Parallel toggle switch which acts on both pickups:
Series Mode - Fat, meaty tones with an accentuated midrange growl that still have plenty of articulation, especially when using a pick. Just the ticket for hard driving rock, punk and heavier styles
Parallel - Leaner and silkier than series mode, with nice high end definition to sit well in the mix and not sound muddy. Great for jazz, pop and JB-style tonesLastly, all of the above options are available in passive mode, active mode, or active with a high end EQ boost. The tonal difference between active and passive is not dramatic, but active mode is a little crisper with a slightly sharper attack and more responsive tone controls. Neither is "better" but active mode is naturally more flexible, and you might only need passive mode if your battery goes dead or if you play an amp with very limited headroom.
With all this tone shaping capability, the L-2000 is capable of anything from bright slap bass, to warm jazz, fat growling low end, or trashy punk. With broad dynamic range and excellent overall sustain, it's really just a matter of a little experimentation to dial in the bass to suit your style or particular gig.
Lastly, for 2024 G&L has fired up the Plek machine, and while fret issues on a G&L are extremely rare in any case, the Plek machine brings an extra measure of consistency to the process.
The G&L L-2000 is immensely flexible instrument, that blends a powerful but easy-to-use control format along with G&L's top notch materials, hardware, fit and finish. If you want to travel light but leave nothing behind in terms of tone, the L-2000 will get the job done.
