G&L Legacy USA Fullerton Red Frost Rosewood with locking tuners

G&L frost (satin) finishes are one of their best kept secrets, and we especially like the way it looks on Fullerton red. It looks "older" without being physically relic'd and they also don't show fingerprints and smudges. The G&L Legacy is Leo Fender's evolutionary continuation of his most famous guitar design, featuring meaningful improvements such as G&L's Dual Fulcrum Vibrato, and Passive Bass and Treble controls.  Respecting the past but not stuck in it, the G&L Legacy is a classic instrument for the ages.

This USA custom ordered Legacy features:

  • 2-Tone Fullerton Red Frost on Alder, 7.8 pounds
  • G&L 'Modern Classic' neck profile, 9.5" radius, 1-11/16" nut
  • .820" Depth at the 1st fret, .870" at the 12th
  • Upgraded Satin vintage tint maple neck with Indian Rosewood fretboard
  • Optional 3-Ply Mint pickguard
  • DF Vibrato bridge
  • (3) G&L Alnico single coil pickups
  • 5-way switch, volume, treble and bass controls
  • Upgraded G&L Locking tuners
  • G&L hardshell case

Alder wood is the classic material for this type of guitar, and complements the single coil pickups nicely. With firm midrange punch and a moderate top end, alder provides good sonic support for lower output Alnico pickups, and keeps them from sounding overly thin and bright. Other woods like ash may look sexier, but alder is in our opinion the way to go.

The G&L Legacy is equipped with (3) G&L Alnico V flat pole pickups that are wound in the low 6K-ohm range. This correlates to an early 60's specification, and while not as glassy as the later 60's CBS-era pickups, they have a little more kick and a less edgy nature. While not by any means a high output pickup, they have sufficient midrange content to drive distortion pedals nicely and produce fat chunky blues tones. The neck and middle pickups have a bouncy, percussive low end with a classically scooped middle, and clean highs. It's the definitive Strat® sound straight off your favorite blues album.

The moderate output of the G&L single coils responds nicely to pedals and distortion. Under mild gain settings, the tones are wonderfully expressive. There is nice harmonic complexity in the high end, and chewy bottom end tones that start out dirty but clean up as they decay, perfect for blues players who like a little hair on their notes. Add more gain and the Legacy thickens up, and is more rock-ready than you'd expect, with chunky mids and crystalline overtones. Even the bridge responds well to increased gain without getting too icy or crackly. While certainly not a hard rock machine, the Legacy is voiced to easily transition from blues to funk, and into the classic rock zone.

In relation to tonal capabilities, the G&L DF Vibrato is always noteworthy. Rather than relying on a few springs and wood screws, it is an improved design that has the bridge floating on two adjustable hardened steel studs mounted in large brass body anchors. This type of floating mechanism allows the player to bend notes upward or downward with complete confidence that the guitar will stay securely in tune. And for added measure we had this guitar built with locking tuners to prevent any string post slippage.

The G&L Legacy is more than just a copy of an original. For a very reasonable street price you get the type of fit, finish, hardware, and high quality electronics that makes a guitar feel crafted, not just assembled. Whether you are a pro or serious hobbyist, the G&L Legacy is a guitar that won't let you down.
