Instead of typical humbucking pickups, the Summit Convertible has the very interesting Duncan P-Rail pickups. The P-Rails contain thee distinct pickups: A humbucker, a single coil, and a P-90. Each pickup has a 3-way toggle allowing the player to switch between the three modes. Combined with the traditional 3-position pickup switch and the HDR active revoicer, you need to statistician to count all the possible combinations.

The HDR is a unique tool that augments the frequency of range of each pickup giving them a mild active boost. The HDR voice is characterized by enhanced clarity and presence -- without a significant change in volume -- and is a nice complement to the many sounds of the P-Rail pickups. Now let's get to those P-Rails...

In the humbucking mode the pickups are big and thick with a lot of output. In the bridge position this comes in handy for churning out some really meaty grind and hard rock crunch. The humbucker mode is certainly big and brawny, however in this guitar that's not a drawback, as it can be combined in so many ways with the other pickups and the revoicer.

The single coil mode does a nice take on the classic Fullerton sound. Not really a Stat or Tele sound, but a nice sparkly tone that's good for clean rhythm, a little pick'in, or a leaner slightly over-driven blues sound, especially with the HDR revoicer punched in.

In our opinion, the P-90 mode produces some of the best stand-alone sounds found on this guitar. The P-Rail P-90's are medium weight in output with plenty of sparkle and a solid midrange that is maybe a little less aggressive than a true P-90 pickup. For those that think P-90's get a little too snarly and honky, this is a plus. Overall, they are a near perfect single coil for players who desire good power and attack but don't want to lose the clarity often associated with high output pickups.

With a guitar that has so many possible pickup combinations, describing the sound is almost impossible. But the best place to start is with both pickups together and to just explore the vast array of top/bottom/hum/singe/P90 permutations. There are just tons of killer tones in here that are punchy, twangy, thick or percussive. Adding in the lively scoop of the HDR revoicer is a little like an ice cream store with 85 flavors.

The neck is a medium "C" profile, measuring around .840 at the first fret with a very mild taper up to the 12th fret. It's a cinch to play, and the traditional 24-3/4" string length provides comfortable action and easy bending. Like all Godin electrics, the medium sized frets are highly polished with very smooth fret ends that blend comfortably into the neck binding. Dialing in the setup is a snap, aided by Godin's dual action truss rod and a fully adjustable Graphtech bridge.

In the end, the Summit Classic Convertible CT is a worthy addition to any guitar arsenal. If you are looking for versatility and quality, but don't want to settle for the traditional choices, the Summit Classic CT Convertible is a hard value to beat.
