The new Harmony amplifier line was first released in 2021, sold briskly and then went on production hiatus. We are happy to report that they are back in production, unchanged and as good as ever. The new Harmony amplifiers are not based on any specific predecessor from the 60's, but do channel some of the styling of that era. Thankfully they are much more ruggedly constructed and neatly finished than the typical Harmony amp of yore.
At 20 watts, the H620 is the do-it-all amplifier of the line: Loud enough for gigging unassisted at smaller venues, great tone at lower volumes, and while not a true lightweight (it is 46 pounds) it still qualifies as a one-hander. But that weight is put to good use as the 23" wide, 10.5" deep semi-closed back cabinet has a lot to do with how the Harmony performs.
At 20 watts, the two 6L6 tubes are not highly stressed, (they could easily produce twice the power) which combined with the semi-closed cabinet gives H620 a deep voice that is full and dimensional. Compared to a lot of small combo amps it just sounds larger, more spacious and substantial. The volume control is also nicely linear and does not suffer the problem of going from "slightly-anemic" to "way-too-loud" early in the dial. The H620 does not have to be loud to sound good, and there is a built-in attenuator for getting more breakup and touch response at lower volumes. In addition the pull Boost control -- also accessible via footswitch -- will drive the amp harder into the crunch zone depending on how you have master/grain set.
But the H620 is not meant to be a high gain amp, and by balancing the Master and Gain controls produces rich cleans that can be pushed into attack-sensitive mild breakup at reasonable volume levels. The available 3-band EQ plus a presence control affords plenty of tone shaping options, and while it's natural voice is not as scooped and twangy as a blackface it can certainly get there. You might say the Harmony leans "Tweed" but with better headroom and low end tightness. Crank up the Master and you can push the H620 into some pretty heavy overdrive, which has a decidedly loose 60's low-wattage amp feel.
With amplifier trends continuing to move towards ever more sophisticated modeling and effects, it's refreshing to see a really good affordable tube amp hit the market. The H620 is just that, and what we really love about the Harmony is the ability to manipulate the clean-to-breakup transitions easily with playing style and pick attack. And while modeling can nail high gain all day long, we feel old analog tech still rules the lower end of the gain spectrum. And there is enough clean headroom that you can happily add your favorite pedals.
With great looks and tone, the Harmony H620 is an excellent value that can form the foundation of a first class studio or gigging setup.
