Built at the historic Heritage factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Harmony guitars respect the past, but are designed and built with the modern player in mind. Featuring classic tone woods, nitrocellulose finishes, and quality hardware, the Rebel Phat Cat P90 takes their attractive double cut solidbody and outfits it with a pair of Seymour Duncan Phat Cat P90 pickups.

The revival of the Harmony brand brings back a historic name known to most for their quirky budget guitars of the 60's, often sold in mail order catalogs. The goal of the new Harmony is not "cheap" but clean, somewhat retro-inspired guitars, free of gimmicks and superfluous tech. The compact mahogany body clocks in at 6.8 pounds, it sports an unusual for this price nitrocellulose finish, and while it has a six-on-a-side locking tuner headstock, it's tilted back to eliminate the need for a string tree. Nothing budget about this.

We measure the neck profile to be roughly .805" at the first fret and .925" at the 12th fret. With the 1-11/16 nut width and not heavily rolled fretboard edges, it feels pleasantly chunky but never bulky. The thickness in the upper frets is just about perfect, and lends great palm support while working up the neck. The 25" scale is 1/2" shorter that the "other" bolt-on brand, and the bolt-on/shorter scale combo is a nice blend of snappy dynamics and comfortable string tension.

Swapping out the Harmony Gold Foil pickups for the Duncan P90's gives the Rebel great note definition and a more open voicing than you get with a P90 set-neck guitar. The neck pickup is percussive, with punchy mids and a clean top end. It can sound quite bluesy in the upper frets, and while the overall tone is on the warm side it still cuts well. The bridge pickup is moderate in output with a crisp attack and plenty of clarity without sounding brittle. The Phat Cats are well-balanced, devoid of the honk and snarl of a hot P90. Played clean its no barn-burner, but P90's and a good drive pedal is our ultimate rock tone: Crunchy, articulate, plenty of attitude and compresses less than a humbucker. Granted they can get a little noisy, but that's what mute pedals are for (and drummers). 

The Rebel Phat Cat gives you that Double Cut Junior feel with a slightly leaner and more articulate voice. The build quality is excellent for the price, few guitars match it for quality of materials, fit and finish. Plus it includes a high-end Mono Vertigo bag. If you don't already have a P90 guitar, the Rebel Harmony is a serious contender.
