Schecter PT Special 3-Tone Sunburst Pearl Electric Guitar - No Bag/Case

The Schecter PT Special guitar combines many of our favorite things at a great price including a lightweight Swamp Ash body, satin sunburst finish, and a P-90 neck pickup. With typical Schecter high quality workmanship, the PT Special is a little bit country and a healthy dose of rock.

The P-90 pickup was first introduced by Gibson in 1946, and features a bar magnet with a fairly wide and shallow bobbin. It was the original pickup offered on the Les Paul before the PAF was invented. Fatter in tone that a Fender-style single coil but still retaining good pick attack and clarity it's a great alternative the more compressed and sometimes muddy Tele neck pickup. The Schecter V-90 has a punchy low end, clear highs, and generally warm character. It's great for leads and rhythm work, and when gain is applied has a smooth, creamy vocal quality. For players who don't know about the P-90 or think it's just for old Jazz boxes, it's got more soul than most humbuckers and more body than the typical single coil. The slightly scooped midrange and sweet top end of the Swamp Ash body is also a good pairing.

The VT-1 bridge pickup is an over-wound stacked series/parallel Tele pickup that is voiced more for what we'd call modern country than twangy country licks. In series mode It's pretty thick, with a strong midrange emphasis and not overly accentuated highs. The parallel mode leans it out somewhat for rhythm work and combines nicely with the neck pickup for more jangly tones. But it's certainly more "Rocker Tele" than it is a chicken pick'n machine.

The nicely finished maple neck has a little chunkier profile than most of the PT line. Schecter just calls it their "C" profile while most of the PT line uses the "Thin C". Overall it's basically about .035" deeper from 1st to 12th fret, which you can feel but it's not dramatic. A little more neck mass is generally good for low end response, and unless your are all-out shredding it's a nice feel for both chords and single note work. The modern 12" radius and jumbo frets make for easy bends and a modern feel.

The Schecter PT Special brings a more modern rock attitude to Leo Fender's famous shape without losing the classic look that....well makes it classic. It's a great affordable entry point to the joys of a P-90, and the bridge pickup can certainly handle the chores of contemporary rock music. It's a great multi-purpose axe with a traditional look.
