Schecter USA PT Wembley Studio Charcoal Electric Guitar w/Hard Case *Authorized Dealer*
The Schecter USA Custom Shop in Sun Valley California produces expertly crafted guitars for discerning pros and enthusiasts. Using premium materials and their own in-house pickups, playing a Schecter USA guitar is a real treat. The PT Wembley Studio has the feel and vibe of a vintage guitar, but with benefits of modern quality control and precision manufacturing techniques.
Just what is vintage supposed to sound like? Some of it is hype, and some of it is on our heads, but in our minds we associate vintage with a less bright, more organic richer tone; more "soul" to put it another way. But a good vintage amp or guitar sometimes has an extra dimension of depth and character. Given that magnets, woods, lacquer finishes, etc. do in fact age, there is something to the vintage theory of mojo. But sometimes old is just old, and the really good vintage stuff is often out of reach. So what do we do?
The Schecter PT Wembley Studio might be an option. With it's lightly aged nitro finish it's got great resonance and will let the wood "breathe" over time. And when we say lightly aged, the emphasis is on lightly. The gloss is subdued and there is a light amount of checking, but nobody dragged it behind a car. In the same vein, the roasted maple neck already has the benefit of having the moisture baked out of it, putting it closer to an older aged vintage neck . This would not be of much benefit without the expertly finished stainless frets and perfectly profiled nut that makes this guitar a breeze to play. And as guitar techs we think the bottom adjust spoke wheel for the neck is the best of all worlds. It's the easiest to adjust -- you'll never strip the nut -- and give the headstock a clean look without the hard-to-adjust Fender style bottom screw.
The Schecter USA pickups are built in a early 50's style with bevelled Alnico 5 magnets for the single coils and a cast Alnico 5 bar magnet with a nickel silver baseplate for the humbucker. The bevelled magnets have an interesting back story: Fender originally bevelled the magnets as they were less prone to chipping and easier to assemble into the fiberboard bobbins. But the bevel also affects the magnetic field making it wider and capturing more string energy. Another happy vintage accident. Schecter also winds the single coils with a touch higher DC resistance for a littler warmer top end and midrange content.
The net result is that the PT Wembley feels like your favorite pair of jeans: Slightly soft around the edges, and fits just right. The neck humbucker gives a fuller, fatter vibe than a classic Tele neck, and while some may miss the little chrome pickup, the Route 57 has a less compressed attack, especially on the low end. High end response is smooth and clear, with a firm but not sharp attack. The VT-1 bridge pickup has the classic Tele twang but with a silky high end that steers clear of any shrill brittleness. You can dig into it for some country picking, but it won't bite back with a harsh response. And if you are of the opinion that the middle pickup is only meant to be played in combination with the others, the VS-1 has a pleasing fullness and subtle growl that makes it a keeper all on its own.
While the definition of vintage tone is in the ear of the beholder, the PT Wembley Studio has the huskier, richer voice we associate with the handful of vintage instruments we've been able to get our hands on. Everything about it feels broken-in and working to perfection. The Wembley Studio is as top-tier guitar that has the intangible "something" that makes certain vintage instruments feel special. But Schecter has kindly saved you the time and effort searching for it.
