TAKAMINE GN20CE Natural Satin NEX shape acoustic is Takamine's entry point to their NEX shape mini-jumbo design. While it's affordably priced, it does not cut corners on materials and features quality Cedar and Mahogany construction, plus Takamine's own excellent built-in electronics.
Takamine's NEX body shape is essentially their take on the mini-jumbo shape. The generous rounded lower bout delivers strong low end response, while the tight waist and narrow upper bout keeps the top end clear and present. Compared to a dreadnought, it's a more balanced frequency response with less midrange boom than your typical dreadnought. With it's Cedar top and laminated Mahogany back and sides, tonally it leans towards the warmer side, but the NEX shape adds high end sparkle and definition. We are fans of Cedar tops, and while they lack the attack of Spruce, they sound "broken in" right away and continue to improve with time.
Takamine has always been known for their electronics, and the TP-4TD system is both simple and effective with a 3-band EQ and built-in tuner. Tested through a NUX Stagemaster the GN20CE sounded natural and balanced and required almost no tweaking to dial it in. There is nice high detail without the brittleness of some piezo systems, along with a rich low end free of boomy mids that can be very hard to dial out. While there are lots of sophisticated acoustic EQ devices on the market, the GN20CE sounded great as is, and there was no temptation to grab an acoustic preamp or other device to make it sound "better". And we appreciated the top mounted battery compartment that makes replacement easy and contortion-free.
By any measure the Takamine GN20CE is an excellent value, and it's amplified capabilities are way ahead of many more expensive guitars. For coffee house and open mic players that need a great sounding guitar at a reasonable price, the GN20CE is worth a serious look.
