The 5 watt Fender Champ is the Little Engine that Could. With just 5 watts and a volume knob it is the epitome of organic, and although it was originally designed as an entry level student amp, players discovered its ability to roar in a studio setting. Headroom? Not really. It's the type of amp you dime, and then play with your guitar's volume control to clean it up. The single-ended 6V6 design with 12AY7 preamp tube and 5Y3 tube rectifier compresses easily, and the small speaker accentuates the prominent midrange of an electric guitar. Purported to be used by Eric Clapton to record Layla, and used by many other studio and famous players, the Champ far exceeded its humble expectations.
