If you are shopping for a Les Paul of this caliber, you likely are already well versed in the capabilities of the Gibson Custom Shop. This is a beautifully finished guitar that balances nicely, resonates well, and sets up perfectly. The un-potted BurstBucker Alnico II pickups are voiced for vintage-era tones with a little extra kick at the bridge position. Alnico II has a softer magnetic pull than the more ubiquitous Alnico 5, and the net result is a smooth top end, a slightly "loose" feel, and plenty of singing harmonic content when gain is applied. More voiced for Blues and Classic Rock than Metal, Alnico II makes a great bridge pickup and fits the character of the guitar perfectly. Think Gary Moore, and you'll get the idea.

If your perception of a Les Paul is something dark, heavy and foreboding, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the clarity and touch response of this Modern Les Paul. While we can't travel back in time, we think this is how they are supposed to sound before the era of hotly wound potted pickups and heavy poly finishes. When a guitar sounds this good, you don't need coil splits and gimmicks, and as with any Les Paul some of the best sounds are with both pickups combined, exploring the many nuances blending the volume and tone controls.

Having a great Les Paul as part of your collection is never a bad thing. And this Custom Shop Modern Les Paul Standard would be a standout addition.
