The original Les Paul guitar was outfitted with P-90 pickups -- the PAF humbucker was not even invented yet -- and for a few years it was the only model available. While ultimately overshadowed by the PAF versions, the P-90's have a unique combination of bite and clarity that is unmatched by any other pickup. If you don't already have a P-90 equipped guitar, this excellent condition Les Paul Standard 50's is a great example of one the most historically significant guitars of all time.

Originally developed in 1946, the Gibson P-90 pickup combines a large flat bobbin with a single bar magnet underneath and adjustable steel pole pieces. P-90's don't take to being over-wound or hot-rodded, and the hot pickup craze of the 70's and 80's was not a good era for these pickups, and they earned a reputation for being dull and muddy. But a lower output vintage spec P-90 is a beautiful thing: Crisp with the right amount of body on the plain strings, and percussive lows, it's a superb blues pickup that takes on a creamy tone with a little drive. Give them a lot of gain and you can rock with more clarity than most humbuckers, with tons of tight crunchy harmonic detail. Gibson thoughtfully gives you individual volume and tone controls and we encourage you to use them. The best tones are not always wide open, and both pickups together unlock a lot of possibilities.
YouTube star Rick Beato has video called "Guitars WE Think Everyone Should Own" and in that video Rick is front and center with a P-90 Les Paul. For him it's the essential sound of rock and roll. We could not agree more and this 50's Standard Les Paul nails it in terms of looks, feel and tone.
