USED McDannald Woodworks Orange Burst 2025 Oval Hole Mandolin w/OHSC
New Arrival at the shop in like new condition.
In the words of Quinton MCDannald:
This is a one-of-a-kind, hand-built oval hole mandolin featuring a deeply sculpted 3D stag relief carved into the back. Designed as both a serious musical instrument and a functional piece of art, it combines modern precision with extensive hand-tuned craftsmanship.
The carving process begins with CNC roughing to establish the primary geometry and relief carving, followed by hours of hand refinement to bring out depth, detail, and character. The stag is not a surface engraving—it is fully dimensional, with contours that shift under changing light, giving the instrument a sense of movement and life.
Tonally, this mandolin delivers the warm, open voice typical of oval hole designs, with strong sustain, clear note separation, and a rounded low end. It is well suited for folk, Celtic, and melodic styles where richness and resonance are preferred over percussive chop
Build & Craftsmanship
- Plates, neck components, and structural elements are precision-cut using CNC for consistency and accuracy
- Fingerboard, inlays, and internal components are also CNC-machined to tight tolerances
- Top and back plates are hand-tuned and graduated, with final voicing done by ear and feel
- 3D carved stag relief is refined by hand after initial machining
- Finish: Orange burst
- Fully set up and ready to play
This hybrid approach allows for exacting structural precision while preserving the critical handwork required for tone and responsiveness.
Every aspect of this mandolin reflects a balance between control and individuality. The CNC process ensures repeatable accuracy in the foundation, while the hand-tuning and carving refinement ensure that no two instruments will ever be identical in feel, tone, or visual character.
This is not a factory instrument, and it is not purely decorative. It is built to be played, while offering a level of visual detail that standard production methods cannot achieve.
Additional Notes
This is a one-off build and will not be duplicated.
