Schecter has been making its slightly offset rendition of the classic single-cut guitar for many years, and for lovers of this design, the Schecter Solo series remains one of the finest examples—and one of the top values—in the category. This 2011 Korean-made Solo-6 Custom is in impeccable shape and features top-quality hardware, electronics, and workmanship.
With its full-thickness mahogany body, this Solo-6 is on the heavier side at 10 pounds. But that was the norm for decades with this design, and only more recently have chambering and thinner bodies become more prevalent. It’s part of the sound, and fortunately, the Solo-6 balances very nicely, making the weight less apparent on the shoulder. The sleek, slim-profile, 3-piece mahogany neck with bound ebony fretboard plays flawlessly and shows the type of clean fretwork we’ve come to expect from Schecter.
For pickups, the Solo-6 Custom keeps it traditional with a Seymour Duncan ’59 in the neck and a Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge. While the ’59 needs no introduction, the Custom Custom stands out as a medium-hot bridge pickup with Alnico 2 magnets instead of the more typical Alnico 5. The softer magnetic pull of Alnico 2 results in smoother highs, more upper-harmonic content, and a rich low end that blooms nicely. It’s great for Classic Rock and Hard Rock, though it may not be tight enough for metal fans and chuggers.
