Started in the mid-60’s by the St. Louis Music Company, Alvarez guitars are still handmade in Kani Japan by Kazuo Yiari and his crew. This Alvarez DY45N is a great example of his craftsmanship.
This 1983 “N” version has a few upgrades over the standard DY45. As with all DY45’s it has mahogany back and sides, but the Spruce top is of a higher grade of wood than standard, and it features an X-brace underside for strength. The neck is solid Mahogany and the fretboard is Ebony rather than the usual Rosewood. An interesting feature of the DY45N is the hand carved Diamond shaped Volute for strength.
All acoustics get better as they get older, and 37 years has mellowed the color of the Spruce top to a nice warm amber. This classic Dreadnaught has the big hearty midrange voice of a fine acoustic, and the lingering sustain that has only gotten better with time.
There is a slight crack at the neck heel where a strap button was added, which may be entirely cosmetic. Fret wear in the first five frets is minor, and the neck is perfectly true throughout. Includes original Alvarez hard case.
This is a nice piece of history properly cared for and ready for the next chapter of its life.
