G&L ASAT Classic Yukon Gold Metallic 2011

Here is a nicely kept 2011 ASAT Classic from the Steve Grom era at G&L. The evolutionary successor to the guitar that put Leo Fender on the map, the G&L ASAT Classic features the timeless layout and pickup configuration of Leo Fender's groundbreaking Telecaster®, and important updates including individual brass bridge saddles and specially design Magnetic Field Design pickups. The result is plenty of classic cluck, twang and sparkle but with more modern output, clarity, and flexibility.

This G&L ASAT Classic features:

  • Yukon Gold metallic on Alder, 7.8 pounds
  • Classic C Neck, 12" radius, 1-5/8 nut width
  • .830" depth first fret .960" depth 12th fret
  • Light tint gloss hard rock maple neck
  • Indian Rosewood fretboard
  • Medium jumbo frets
  • Sperzel tuners
  • 1-ply black pickguard
  • G&L MFD ASAT “ashtray” bridge pickup assembly
  • G&L MFD neck pickup
  • Volume and tone controls
  • Plek laser guided fret finishing
  • Deluxe tolex G&G hardshell case
  • Made in Fullerton, CA

For fans of the old Classic C neck, this guitar is a great find. We love the mildly chunky profile of the Classic C, and it provides great palm support in the upper frets. While the G&L Modern Classic rules these days, we still love the G&L #1 neck profile. Built before tinted neck finishes were offered, this guitar also has a light tint gloss neck.

The original Tele® neck pickup was actually designed to mimic a bass guitar, and it's muddy dark sound was a feature, not a defect. Fender progressively made the neck pickup more usable, but to this day many players have a mixed feelings about it. Leo Fender finally fixed it with his ASAT Classic MFD pickup. It's got the classic round, slightly hollow Tele neck tone, but with better clarity, less compression and a stronger attack across the spectrum. Chalk it up to MFD design, which uses a low resistance coil and fairly strong ceramic magnet. It will punch through the mix much better than a traditional Tele pickup, but roll it off a little and the softer, more bell-like Tele tone emerges. It's vintage in nature, but much more usable in the context of a band setting.

G&L's ASAT MFD bridge pickup was Leo Fender's take on improving his classic bridge pickup (which was originally lifted from his pedal steel guitars). It's got all those twangy, chewy vintage flavors packed in there but with more body, output, and fewer sharp edges. Add some gain and this pickup becomes an awesome classic rock machine with surprising rock capabilities. It's truly a great lead pickup; harmonic, crunchy, with great touch sensitivity and rock-ability. The MFD pickups stretch the limits of what you can expect with this type of guitar, without heavily compromising traditional tones.

This is a deceptively versatile guitar, and its ability to flow from country twang to jazz, blues, funk and killer rock crunch makes it hard to put down. Who would have guessed that two pickups and a slab of wood could be so much fun? The ASAT Classic combines classic looks, flawless finish, and outstanding flexibility.
