Now a household name in the boutique market, John Suhr was building guitars in NYC for well over a decade before opening a shop in his own name in 1997. This Modern Classic was custom ordered from a local dealer in 2014 and it's chock full of top notch appointments.

This custom Suhr Modern Classic features:

  • Montego Black Metallic finish on 2-Piece Basswood, 7.6 pounds
  • Maple Top - Scraped Wood Binding
  • Roasted Maple Satin Neck, "Modern Elliptical" profile .800-.850
  • Painted Headstock
  • Tusq 1.650" nut, 16" radius
  • 24 Jumbo Stainless Steel frets
  • Suhr locking tuners
  • SSV Neck Humbucker
  • SSH Plus Bridge Humbucker
  • 5-Way switching for additional split coil tones
  • Gotoh 510 2-point tremolo
  • Suhr Deluxe Hardshell Case
  • Made in Elsinore, California

Other than some hard-of hearing riffs at the NAMM show, we haven't played too many Suhr's, so this coming through the door was a nice Suhrprise (sorry). We knew of their reputation, but after an overdue sound test through our favorite amps, consider us believers. The SSV neck pickup is a spanky Alnico V humbucker wound to a mild 8k resistance that gives you the power without compromising clarity and articulation. The SSH Plus in the bridge is a rock beast, also sporting Alnico V magnets, wound to a spicy 17k. Both pickups sound great with the split coil options in the 5-way switch and it really elevates the versatility of an otherwise familiar 2-pickup format.

The Modern Elliptical neck profile is built for speed and performance. It's a comfortable D-shape profile with a slim taper that gives you enhanced access and wrap-around ability across the board. The nut width is a traditional 1-11/16" and the modern 16" radius gives you a nice flat surface for big bends and quick licks on the ever-smooth Stainless Steel frets. If you're a fan of maple necks and fretboards, the roasting gives it a bit more structural integrity and makes it look like a million bucks. If you're looking for a world class build that colors outside the lines, give this a serious look.
