Earthquaker Devices Time Shadows V2 Subharmonic Multi-Delay Resonator

The new Earthquaker Devices Time Shadows V2 is another cosmically warped home run that is a collaborative effort between EQD and Death By Audio. Like any of EQD's more adventurous pedals, a quick catchy description is often hard to come by. But in most simplistic terms it's a pitch shifting delay with an envelope filter. 

We agree with EQD in that the three modes are very different from each other, although their description of the middle position "!!" mode is pure marketing hyperbole. That being said, it's the most fun, and most playful sounding setting. It utilizes both high and low pitch shifts with a good deal of randomness thrown in for good measure. It sounds like the soundtrack to a 70's acid trip movie, but in a good way. The EQD side is dark and stormy with a fuzzy sub-octave that grinds along somewhat like an an angry pipe organ. And the Death by Audio side is brighter, more etherial and spacey/dreamy. Because the pedal uses an envelope filter it's sensitive to instrument input, level, and how hard you attack. We found the best settings in every mode were with the filter knob past noon, while below that point the tones were a little dark and murky for our tastes

"This all sounds nuts: What do you do with a pedal like this?" The Time Shadows is capable of a dazzling array of delay/filter/pitch tones that can add spice and impact to your musical creations. But unless you are on a 70's acid trip, it's not an "always on" pedal. That's where EQD's intuitive and easy-to-use six memory presets come in to play. You can create 6 wildly different soundscapes and easily save them for when you want to create that special musical passage. As we've said on other EQD pedal reviews, their memory preset system is one of the easiest out there, and makes the Time Shadows a real performance tool rather than a one-trick pony.

If we have not already scared you off, this pedal is a lot fun and capable of a range of captivating effects. And the six memory presets lets you capture your creative thoughts for when the moment strikes. Never has whacky been so easy to use.
