Reverend Charger Air HH Metallic Bordeaux 2026 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar - No Bag/Case

The early Reverend guitars were all essentially semi-hollow, constructed using a wooden frame and phenolic laminate tops and backs (that's how our 2004 Rumblefish bass is built). The Reverend Charger HH takes a more conventional approach but adds a Spruce top for enhanced high-end detail, Steelhead Humbucking pickups and their uber-useful bass contour control. Uniquely Reverend and uniquely useful the Charger Air HH is semi-hollow done the Reverend way.

What is the impact of semi-hollow construction? We feel it give the gives the guitar a more balanced, complex and smoother tone, but at the expense of some attack and low-end response. This is why they are often favored by rhythm guitarists and jazz players and not so much by country pickers and hard rock chuggers.

The Reverend Steelhead pickups make good use of the semi-hollow design using both Alnico 5 and Ceramic magnet construction with oversize steel pole pieces. The Alnico magnet provides a warm organic top end, while the Ceramic magnet offers nice attack and touch sensitivity. Ceramic magnets are often associated with high output metal pickups, but their efficiency makes them very responsive to playing nuances. With their medium output the Steelhead pickups interact well with pedals, providing plenty of sparkle, complexity, and sensitivity to picking styles.

Adding additional versatility, the Reverend bass contour control is a standout feature. Technically it's a simple high pass filter, but the results are impressive. It's gradual, musical and when rolling off the bass it never feels as though the sound is getting "weaker" just leaner and more defined. As it relates to humbucker pickups it's much more useful than any coil split, and if you are typically not a fan of neck humbuckers the bass contour control will cure that. The contour control offers tremendous versatility, and for an HH guitar allows for lots of funky, snappy tones that would otherwise not be possible. The internal wiring is tidy, using full-size Alpha pots, film capacitors, and shielding paint.

For many years all Reverend guitars were all bolt-on, and the Charger follows that lineage with a nicely finished 6-bolt roasted maple neck with locking tuners and triple string tree. We measured the neck dimensions to be around .830" at the first fret and .880" at the 12th. While Reverend calls that "Medium Oval" it's very much in the range of a slim C profile found on American Fenders or the sadly departed G&L Modern Classic. It's topped off by a dark Rosewood fretboard and nicely finished medium jumbo frets.

The Charger Air HH has all the benefits of a semi-hollow guitar, and the Steelhead pickups add a dose of attack and dynamics that many semis lack. The Reverend Charger HH is an extremely capable guitar for a variety of genres.

In the words of Reverend:

Warm, rich, and alive. The Reverend Air Charger HH is built to breathe. A solid slab of mahogany is routed out to yield a full-length center block. This construction delivers sustain you can feel. A spruce top adds shimmer, clarity, and harmonic sparkle. The semi-hollow construction adds resonance, depth, and musical response. Steelhead HBs with oversized steel poles offer punch, clarity, and dynamic response. Bold colors, violin brown backs, and a new headstock logo are distinctly Reverend. Signature Shooting Star f-holes complete the unmistakable look. The Reverend Charger Air HH is perfect for those seeking warm, rich cleans, extremely responsive overdrive tones, and controllable feedback.
